SAEDNEWS: Itchy palms are common and usually caused by skin issues—but sometimes, they can signal a serious health problem. Here’s what you should know.

What Causes Itchy Palms?

Itching of the palms is something most of us experience from time to time. Contrary to popular belief, it’s not always a sign of incoming wealth! Usually, itchy palms result from skin issues, but in rare cases, they can indicate a more serious underlying condition. Understanding the causes can help you manage it better.

Common Causes of Itchy Palms

Itching can be uncomfortable regardless of where it occurs, and when it affects the hands, it can interfere with daily activities. Some of the most common causes include:

1. Hand Eczema
Scientific reports suggest that about 10% of people in industrialized countries suffer from hand eczema. This non-contagious condition can cause itching, inflammation, dryness, redness, flaking, and sometimes blisters.

A specific type called pompholyx or dyshidrotic eczema produces small, itchy blisters on the sides of the fingers, palms, and even the soles of the feet. People with certain occupations—especially those whose hands are frequently exposed to moisture, chemicals, or irritants—are at higher risk. Common at-risk jobs include:

  • Catering and food service

  • Cleaning and janitorial work

  • Hairdressing

  • Healthcare

  • Mechanics

A family history of hand eczema also increases susceptibility.

2. Allergic Reactions
Frequent exposure to irritants and chemicals can trigger allergic reactions, known as contact dermatitis. Symptoms may appear 48–96 hours after contact with an allergen.

Common allergens include:

  • Metals, such as rings or jewelry

  • Perfumes or scented products

  • Various soaps

  • Disinfectants

  • Antimicrobial or antibacterial compounds

  • Dust and soil

  • Chlorinated water

Repeated exposure is often necessary before the skin reacts, as the body releases histamines that trigger itching.

3. Diabetes
High blood sugar can lead to dry skin. This dryness may manifest as itchy bumps or skin-colored patches on the palms and other parts of the body.

4. Drug Reactions
Certain medications can cause mild allergic reactions, leading to itching, particularly on the hands and feet. Histamine accumulation in these areas triggers the sensation. If a medication is identified as the cause, consult a doctor before discontinuing it, unless symptoms are severe.

5. Cirrhosis
An autoimmune liver disorder called primary biliary cirrhosis can cause itchy patches on the palms. This condition affects bile ducts connecting the liver to the stomach, causing bile accumulation, liver damage, and scarring. Other possible symptoms include:

  • Skin spots on the palms

  • Nausea

  • Bone pain

  • Diarrhea

  • Dark urine

  • Jaundice

6. Nerve Damage
Conditions like diabetes can cause nerve damage. When nerves are impaired, signals to the brain may be misinterpreted, causing itching in areas like the palms even if the skin itself is healthy.

7. Dyshidrotic Eczema
Also known as hand-and-foot eczema or pompholyx, this condition produces tiny, watery, itchy blisters on the hands, fingers, and feet. It may be linked to stress, irritants, or seasonal allergies. Symptoms include:

  • Small, water-filled blisters on fingers

  • Intense itching

  • Painful skin

  • Redness and inflammation

  • Flaking or cracked skin

Those sensitive to allergens are more prone, and women are twice as likely as men to develop it.

8. Psoriasis
Psoriasis accelerates skin cell growth, resulting in itchy patches, scaling, or plaques. It can affect various parts of the body, especially joints, fingers, and nails. Symptoms often include:

  • Red, inflamed skin

  • White or silvery patches

  • Very dry, cracked skin that may bleed

  • Pain around inflamed areas
