First, when buying a pineapple, choose one that feels firm. Also, its skin should be golden and brown with a slight hint of green. Be careful not to select one that is overly green.

The leaves should be relatively loose, but avoid pineapples with wilted or brown leaves. Such a pineapple is considered ripe and will have excellent taste and aroma. Stay with us to learn a simple and easy method for peeling pineapple.

How to Peel a Pineapple with a Knife

  1. To peel a pineapple, you will need a long knife.

  2. First, cut off the top and bottom of the pineapple. You can also remove the leaves by twisting them or cutting them off with a knife, then slice about one centimeter from both the top and bottom. Many people use the removed top with leaves as a table decoration.

  3. Then place the pineapple upright on a tray. Once the bottom is cut, the fruit will stand easily without falling. Now pay attention to the edges of the pineapple. These parts usually have a bitter and unpleasant taste and should be removed.

  4. The corners around the pineapple look like “eyes.” You should position the knife in a way that completely removes these eyes. In fact, with the final cuts, your pineapple will become more angular and will no longer have a round shape. However, be careful not to cut too far away from the eyes, because this will waste too much of the fruit.

  5. The first cut should go all the way through the pineapple, cutting along its entire length.

  6. Next, continue cutting the other sections in the same way. You should repeat this process for the remaining corners or “eyes” of the pineapple, usually making each cut at about a 45-degree angle to the previous one. However, as mentioned, be careful not to go too deep and remove too much of the pineapple flesh.

  7. Once the pineapple skin has been completely removed, check for any remaining parts or “eyes” that you may have missed. If you want to slice the pineapple into rings, you can remove the core and then cut it into slices of your desired thickness. Alternatively, you can first cut it into rings and then remove the core—the order is up to you.

  8. Removing the core of the pineapple: If you want to remove the entire core, you should first divide the pineapple into four parts. Make a cross-shaped (+) cut on top of the pineapple and continue cutting along those lines down to the bottom, so you end up with four equal sections.

  9. Now, to extract the central core, cut down through the middle of one of the four sections. The part that should be removed is easily noticeable because it has a different texture and a lighter color. Repeat the same process for the remaining three sections.

  10. Finally, chop the remaining pineapple flesh into small cubes. At this point, the core has been fully removed and you can easily enjoy the fruit. If you plan to eat it later, make sure to store the cut pieces in an airtight, sealed container in the refrigerator.
