US Begins Withdrawal from Key Syria Base as Troops Move to Iraqi Kurdistan

According to reports, the withdrawal from the Qasrak base in northwestern Hasakah province—described as the largest U.S. military facility in Syria—is underway.

The operation began on February 23, 2026, and continues, with roughly 100 trucks and heavy vehicles moving through the al-Walid crossing toward Iraqi Kurdistan. Qasrak base is located in the northwestern countryside of Hasakah.

More broadly, the United States has gradually pulled back in recent months—especially since late 2025—relocating troops and equipment primarily to Iraq’s Kurdistan region, including areas such as Erbil and nearby bases.

This redeployment is part of a larger plan to move about 1,000 remaining U.S. troops out of Syria over the next two months, targeting completion by around April 2026.

Separately, the U.S. has withdrawn from the al-Tanf base in southeastern Syria, near the Syria-Iraq-Jordan border triangle, and from the al-Shaddadi base in southern Hasakah, handing both facilities over to forces of the Jolani government. U.S. forces have also scaled back operations at several other sites in northeastern Syria, including positions near Rmeilan.

The troop repositioning follows political and military changes in Syria after the fall of the Bashar al-Assad government, including the integration of parts of the Syrian Democratic Forces into the Syrian army and the Trump administration’s decision to reduce the U.S. military presence in the region.
