SAEDNEWS: "Saqqara” is a vast and ancient burial site in Egypt, where the deceased of the capital, Memphis, were laid to rest.
According to the History and Culture Service of Saed News, this site encompasses numerous pyramids, including the world-famous Step Pyramid of Pharaoh Djoser. The area also contains many mastabas. Covering an area of seven by one and a half square kilometers, it is located 30 kilometers south of present-day Cairo. The name Saqqara is derived from the Beni Saqqar tribe that historically inhabited the region.
Saqqara is home to the oldest large-scale stone building complex ever constructed in human history. High-ranking officials from every dynasty of ancient Egypt also built tombs for themselves in Saqqara. For nearly three thousand years, this area served as a burial ground for ordinary citizens and Egyptian elites alike, a tradition that continued even after the end of the pharaonic era during the Ptolemaic and Roman periods.
The remains of the palace attributed to the Egyptian noble, Prophet Joseph (Yusuf, peace be upon him), and his companion Zuleikha are also located in Saqqara, making it one of the most visited and tourist-attractive sites in Egypt.
