What Is a Book and What Role Does It Play in Our Lives?

SAEDNEWS: A book comes from the Arabic root “kataba” (کتب), which means “to write.” Every book consists of specific and well-defined sections, based on which it is written and published.

What Is a Book and What Role Does It Play in Our Lives?

According to Saednews, A book is a collection of written, illustrated, printed, or blank pages, made from ink, paper, animal skin, or other materials such as glue and thread. These pages are usually fastened or connected to one another along one side. Each sheet in a book is called a leaf, while each side of a leaf is called a page.

Definitions of a book found in other dictionaries are actually closer to the definition of a codex, which will be discussed later.

The history of the book goes back approximately 5,000 years.

About 4,500 years ago, the people of Mesopotamia used clay tablets to record governmental and financial matters, often in the form of numerical records.

The modern form of the book—which, considering the emergence of e-books, might eventually be called the traditional form—developed about 1,800 years ago for writing Christian religious texts.

Texts were written on papyrus or leather and then sewn together using suitable tools.

Around 1440, Gutenberg invented the printing press, which, in a sense, helped take equality in access to written texts one step further.

Even today, the technological process of preparing a printed book is similar in many ways to the past. Only the tools have changed.

Nowadays, however, it is no longer necessary to print thousands of copies of a book to make the process economically worthwhile.

You can even send just 10 copies to a digital printing machine and have them printed. Binding may sometimes be performed by the same machine and sometimes by a separate piece of equipment.

Although the cathode-ray tube was invented about 50 years ago to make it possible to display an image of a book on a screen, it took another 30 years for the true concept of an electronic book to emerge.

Until fairly recently—around 15 years ago—modern LCD and LED displays were not common, and looking at a monitor for long periods could be extremely tiring and harmful to the eyes.

Yes, in 1999, the first electronic book, known as NuvoMedia’s Rocket eBook, emerged.

Interestingly, this happened several years after the development of the Internet, Amazon, Google, and other major technologies and companies. Even I find this somewhat surprising.

One important point, in my opinion, can be used to distinguish a book from an article.

After the emergence of the Walkman, audiobooks also became popular, perhaps even before e-books.

Characteristics of a Good Book

1. It Has a Clear Ending

Consider a feature film compared with a television series.

A feature film comes to an end. Although some elements may appear in another film, the movie attempts to contain all the necessary elements within itself.

For example, it has a purpose and an ending. Even an open ending is still an ending; what matters is that your involvement with that particular film is complete.

A series, on the other hand, is designed to lead you toward the next episode.

A book may refer you to other books, but it does not continuously direct you toward a future version that has not yet been published. Integrated multi-volume books are an exception; when several volumes share one unified purpose, the entire collection can be considered a single work.

2. It Is Comprehensive Within Its Purpose

Imagine that you are going to speak at a meeting with a clearly defined agenda.

That agenda becomes the purpose of the meeting. How completely you cover that agenda determines its comprehensiveness.

A book should cover a subject or story as completely as possible within the scope available to it. It should address a particular topic according to the space and structure it has.

For example, you might pick up a magazine in which each section discusses a different topic. In that case, it cannot really be considered a single book.

Perhaps the magazine has an overall purpose, but its articles do not necessarily have enough coherence or connection with one another.

These days, some books have become common in which different people write different chapters.

If the editor and project manager establish a clear direction for the entire work, then it can be considered a book. Otherwise, it is essentially a collection of articles.

3. It Has a Minimum Length

You either need to be a very skilled writer or have an extremely limited objective to write a short but comprehensive book around an important subject and bring it to a proper conclusion.

Leaving aside the fact that the meanings of book, article, and other forms of writing are sometimes blurred, I personally consider a very short book to be closer to an article.

Interestingly, in 1964, UNESCO attempted to establish a definition of a book at a conference. The resulting definition was:

“A non-periodical printed publication of at least forty-nine pages, exclusive of cover pages.”

In other words:

A non-periodical printed work containing at least 49 pages within a physical volume.

4. It Has a Defined Structure or Process

Look at the table of contents of a book, or examine the roadmap of a series of books.

You will see that there is a structure and a map of the content.

This defined structure is intended to help you learn or follow the material.

The chapters do not necessarily have to be read consecutively. For this reason, some books include a roadmap or a dependency diagram at the beginning, allowing readers to choose an appropriate path through the material.

A magazine, however, generally does not have such a sequence. Therefore, it usually does not require a roadmap either.

Having an appropriate process or structure to follow can be extremely useful.

There is another term called monograph, which can be translated as a scholarly treatise.

A monograph is different from a general book.

A monograph is a type of book written by a single author and focused on a specialized subject. It is not a serial publication such as a magazine or newspaper.

The early definitions of a book were actually closer to the definition of a codex, which was described as:

“Leaves of uniform size bound in some manner along one edge, and typically held between two covers.”

In other words:

Leaves of equal size that are attached or sewn together along one edge and placed between two covers.

Later, as many different forms of books emerged, this definition became, in my opinion, less suitable.

What Is a Book and What Purpose Does It Serve in Life?

A book is not merely a collection of pages. It is a structured medium for preserving, communicating, and exploring ideas, knowledge, stories, experiences, and information. Throughout history, books have evolved from clay tablets and handwritten manuscripts into printed volumes, audiobooks, and electronic books.

Their fundamental purpose, however, has remained largely the same: to preserve knowledge and make it accessible to others across time and distance.
