3D Masterpieces by a German Artist Transform Streets into Canyons—Now Try Convincing Your Brain They’re Just Flat Roads!

According to Saed News Society Service, Edgar Müller, a renowned street artist, is a master at creating astonishing three-dimensional artworks using chalk, with the street as his canvas. Working with up to five assistants, he paints from sunrise to sunset. Müller says his inspiration comes from Julian Beever, the British artist known as the “pavement Picasso,” who creates dramatic yet softer 3D works published in outlets such as the Daily Mail and other British media.

Müller explains: “I wanted to play with positive and negative concepts to encourage people to rethink what they see. I like to imagine that later, when they go home, they’ll think more about that frightening scene and say to themselves, ‘Wow, that was really scary!’”

It’s truly hard to convince your brain that these incredible 3D images are drawn on a flat surface.

Müller spent five days, twelve hours a day, creating this 250-square-meter depiction of a massive chasm. When viewed from the correct angle, the piece appears fully three-dimensional. He then encourages passersby to interact with the illusion by pretending the chasm is real, completing the visual trick.
