Exposing Inhumane Treatment in US Migrant Detention Centers

According to SAEDNEWS, citing Reuters, human rights organizations filed a lawsuit in a court in El Paso, Texas, reporting human rights violations at the largest migrant detention center in the city, where three people have died over the past nine months since the facility opened.

According to the report, the American Civil Liberties Union, along with other human rights organizations, filed this complaint on behalf of four individuals currently detained at the Camp East Montana facility.

In this lawsuit, the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the Department of Homeland Security are named as defendants. The organizations stated that the aim of this action is to improve conditions for more than 2,700 detainees held at the facility. They report inhumane treatment at the center, where detainees are held in cage-like cells without windows and are subjected to physical abuse by guards, as well as exposure to diseases such as measles and tuberculosis.

Forensic doctors in El Paso ruled the death of a Cuban migrant at Camp East Montana on January 3 as a homicide, citing asphyxiation due to neck compression as the cause.
