According to Saed News’ social affairs report, in Japan, a strong work ethic has become a deeply ingrained part of the culture. Most people—even the wealthy—consider working an essential part of daily life.

In the years following World War II, working conditions were so harsh that a term called karoshi, meaning “death from overwork,” became common. Today, despite a relative standard of living, the culture of hard work persists—and some people even sleep while standing.

Recently, a Japanese company invented a device called the Vertical Sleep Pod (Gireaffenap), which allows people to take naps or even enter deep sleep while standing. These pods are especially useful in cafes and restaurants with limited space.

According to the creators, the device not only occupies minimal space but is also well-suited for sleeping, and waking up from it is reportedly easy. Each pod includes an adjustable alarm system and safety supports for different parts of the body.

The pods also feature height adjustment, enabling users to find their ideal posture. Available in both traditional and modern designs, they offer excellent sound insulation and ventilation, ensuring outside noise stays out and rest comes easy.
