SAEDNEWS: One of the most attractive and climate-friendly provinces in Iran is Lorestan Province. Despite its warm-hearted and hospitable people, this region also features a very unique and distinctive natural landscape. If we were to describe all the beauties of this area, it would not be possible to fully explain them in such a short space.
According to Saednews, When you see Shirez Canyon in Lorestan, Iran, you may wonder why you should ever exhaust yourself traveling to famous European or American destinations. Is the nature of Western countries somehow more valuable than Iranâs landscapes? Shirez Canyon is a striking example of Iranâs breathtaking natural beauty, with waterfalls, springs, layered rock walls, and lush scenery that captivates every visitor. Before even reading about it, simply looking at its images is enough to draw you toward this remarkable place.

When you enter Lorestan Province, you are positioned between the three provinces of Ilam, Kermanshah, and Lorestan. From Kuhdasht County, through the Zardalan district and Oladqobad region, and into the heart of the Zagros Mountains, you reach Shirez Canyon.
Its extraordinary natural formation has earned it national heritage registration. Even UNESCO has recognized its significance, bringing global attention to this natural masterpiece.
Beyond its untouched beauty, the canyon also holds ancient history. Human traces dating back thousands of years can be found across its terrain. The canyon lies about 50 kilometers north of central Kuhdasht. There are many local legends about the origin of its name, but none are scientifically confirmed.

One of the most unique features of Shirez Canyon is its layered sedimentary cliffs, shaped over centuries by rain, wind, and snow erosion. These formations create stunning striped rock patterns.
Towering cliffs rise between 150 to 200 meters, accompanied by rivers and waterfalls where trout can be found. The experience of standing in the canyon is unforgettableâvisitors can sit for hours in its peaceful environment or enjoy the sound of flowing water echoing through the gorge.
The canyonâs water originates from the Zagros highlands and eventually flows into the Seymareh River, a major tributary of the Karkheh River in western Iran. Although vegetation is not dense, the regionâs climate supports wild fig, grape, pear trees, and scattered plane and oak trees, adding natural beauty to the landscape.

At the end of the canyon lies a cave locally known as âGod Bridge.â The water inside remains extremely cold due to the absence of sunlight. The cave extends about 150 meters in length.
Visitors are advised to wear proper footwear and carry a flashlight, as the cave floor is sharp and slippery, and mobile reception is unreliable.
Shirez Canyon features several waterfalls, the most famous of which is known as the âBirds Waterfall.â Although wildlife is rarely seen in the canyon, birds have built nests in the rock cavities along its walls. The waterfall near these nesting sites gives the area its name.
Another iconic formation is the Stone Minaretâa natural rock pillar standing about 80 meters high and 10 meters in diameter. Over millions of years, erosion from water, wind, and seismic activity shaped it into a freestanding column-like structure.
The best time to visit Shirez Canyon is during spring and summer, when the weather is mild and pleasant. Autumn and winter visits are possible but require preparation for cold conditions.

To reach the canyon, travelers can drive from Khorramabad (about 141 km), then continue 50â55 km to Kuhdasht County. From there, a route leads toward Zardalan and Oladqobad, followed by a short dirt road to the canyon entrance. Parking areas are available near the starting point.
