According to Saednews, Currywurst is one of Germany’s most popular and delicious street foods. It is believed to have been created in Hamburg, Germany, in 1947. Loved by both children and adults, this flavorful dish has many variations. Below is a traditional-style recipe that is easy to prepare and especially convenient when you need a quick lunch or dinner.

If you prepare the curry sauce in advance, you can keep it refrigerated and have a delicious meal ready in very little time.

Ingredients

For the Curry Sauce

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil

  • ½ cup finely chopped yellow onion

  • 1 small garlic clove

  • 1½ tablespoons curry powder

  • 1 tablespoon sweet paprika

  • ⅛ teaspoon ground cloves

  • ⅛ teaspoon ground cinnamon

  • 1 cup ketchup

  • 1 tablespoon tomato paste

  • 5 tablespoons vegetable or chicken stock

  • 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar

  • 1 tablespoon honey

  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce

  • 1 teaspoon sugar

  • ¼ teaspoon yellow mustard

  • ½ teaspoon salt

  • ⅛ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper

  • Cayenne pepper, to taste

For Serving

  • 4 German sausages (Bratwurst)

  • French fries, as needed

  • Extra curry powder, for sprinkling

How to Make Currywurst

Step 1: Prepare the Curry Sauce

Heat the olive oil in a small saucepan. Add the chopped onion and cook until it becomes soft and translucent. Add the garlic and cook briefly.

Be careful not to brown the onion or garlic.

Step 2: Add the Spices

Add the curry powder, paprika, ground cloves, and cinnamon. Cook for about 30 seconds, stirring constantly, until the spices become fragrant.

Add the remaining sauce ingredients and bring the mixture to a boil. Reduce the heat to medium-low, cover the saucepan, and simmer for about 15 minutes. Stir occasionally to prevent the sauce from sticking.

Step 3: Blend the Sauce

Allow the sauce to cool slightly, then transfer it to a blender. Blend until completely smooth and creamy.

Let the sauce cool completely before serving.

Prepare the Sausages

First, gently cook the sausages in a little boiling water. Drain them well, then grill or pan-fry them until thoroughly browned.

A key part of authentic-style Currywurst is achieving a deeply browned, crisp outer layer on the sausages. If you are frying them in a pan, use enough oil to ensure they brown evenly.

Some Currywurst recipes also recommend making a few shallow vertical cuts in the sausages to help them cook more evenly.

Meanwhile, you can cut potatoes into strips and fry them until golden and crisp.

How to Serve Currywurst

Cut the cooked sausages crosswise into small, bite-sized pieces. Arrange them on a plate or tray, generously spoon the curry ketchup over the top, and finish with a sprinkle of curry powder.

Serve with crispy French fries or fresh sandwich bread.

In Germany, Currywurst with fries is often served on a simple tray with toothpicks, making it an easy and enjoyable street-food meal.
