The winner of the competition was a 24-year-old architect named Hossein Amanat, a graduate of the College of Fine Arts at the University of Tehran. Construction of the Azadi Tower began on November 2, 1969, and after twenty-eight months of work, it was inaugurated on January 14, 1972, under the name Shahyad Tower. Following the Iranian Revolution, the tower was renamed Azadi Tower.
