SAEDNEWS: The Washington Post reports that Donald Trump has limited options for significantly expanding economic sanctions against Iran, which has already faced U.S. sanctions since 2018.
According to SaedNews: The Washington Post, citing Trump’s threats to impose economic sanctions on Iran on an “unprecedented” scale, reported that the U.S. president has relatively few options for turning those threats into action.
Edward Fishman, a senior fellow and director of the Center on Global Economic Policy at the Council on Foreign Relations, said Trump frequently makes such threats but often follows them with limited action.

Fishman noted that Iran has been under U.S. sanctions since 2018. As a result, he said, one of the remaining avenues for Trump would be to increase pressure on Iran’s trading partners, including China, the United Arab Emirates and Turkey.
Other possibilities include targeting banks and refineries that purchase relatively small amounts of Iranian energy, as well as imposing sanctions on banks holding Iranian assets overseas.
Fishman stressed that there is not much more Trump can do unless he is prepared to threaten countries around the world with exclusion from the U.S. economy if they conduct business with Iran.
