U.S. Accused of Violating Islamabad Understanding: Which Clause of the Ceasefire Agreement Was Breached?

According to the Political Desk of Saed News Agency, Iran's Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement early Wednesday, July 8, condemning the United States for what it described as a clear violation of Article 10 of the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding.

The statement said that the Ministry strongly condemned the U.S. Treasury Department's decision to revoke the temporary suspension of sanctions on Iranian oil sales, calling it a serious breach of Article 10 of the ceasefire memorandum signed on June 18, 2026. The Ministry stated that the U.S. government bears full responsibility for the consequences of what it described as a violation of its commitments.

The U.S. Treasury revoked a general license that had been issued less than a month earlier, which had permitted Iran to sell oil and petrochemical products. According to Reuters, a U.S. official claimed that Iran's actions in the Strait of Hormuz were "completely unacceptable" and warned that those actions would carry consequences.

The statement further asserted that the cancellation of the general license, originally issued on June 21, less than 20 days after the signing of the Islamabad Memorandum, demonstrates what Iran described as the United States' bad faith, inconsistency, and lack of reliability. It also alleged that during the past 20 days, the United States—either directly or through actions attributed to Israel against Lebanon—had committed multiple violations of various provisions of the memorandum.

According to the Ministry, Iran has acted in good faith since signing the memorandum on June 18 and has made every effort to fulfill its obligations under the agreement by utilizing all available capacities. However, it claimed that the United States has continued its longstanding practice of violating its commitments while attempting to justify those actions with various explanations.

The statement concluded by warning of the consequences of what it called U.S. treaty violations and declared that Iran would take any measures it considers necessary to safeguard its national interests and security.
