Saed News: James Cameron recently explained in an interview on the Empire Film Podcast that he is currently working on the screenplays for Avatar 4 and Avatar 5 and plans to develop these two films alongside other projects.
According to SAEDNEWS, Cameron said the delay in production is due to him and Disney exploring ways to make the films cheaper and faster to produce. Cameron said:
“They are trying to find a way to make these films in half the time and at two-thirds of the cost. Of course, it will take about a year to figure that out.”
“I am working on several projects. Avatar 4 and Avatar 5 are still in the planning stage. We are working on new technologies to make them more efficient, because these films are extremely expensive and time-consuming. I want to make them in half the time and at two-thirds of the cost. That is my standard.”
Avatar: Fire and Ash, the latest installment in the franchise, was made with a budget of around $350–400 million but earned approximately $1.49 billion at the box office. However, this was lower than the previous two films, each of which grossed over $2 billion. Producer Jon Landau has confirmed that Avatar 4 and Avatar 5 are currently in pre-production. According to the plan, production on these films was expected to begin before the digital release of Fire and Ash.
According to Cameron, the biggest challenge is budget. The world of Pandora relies heavily on highly realistic visual effects, which makes production extremely costly. Each film also runs for over three hours. Therefore, Disney is likely aiming to reduce costs for the next installments without compromising visual quality and realism.
It appears that Cameron and Disney will need significant time to design this new production structure, but if successful, it could secure the future of the franchise and keep it profitable. It is not yet clear what methods will be used to reduce costs, but if they succeed, production of the sequels will likely be confirmed.
