According to SAEDNEWS, citing Faradid, the ruby weighs about 2.2 kilograms and has been displayed at the presidential office in Naypyidaw. Myanmar military officials have examined it, and images of the stone have been released by the army’s information team.

The gemstone was discovered near Mogok in Upper Mandalay Region, an area known as the heart of Asia’s lucrative gemstone mining industry. In recent months, this region has witnessed intense clashes due to Myanmar’s ongoing civil war.

According to Myanmar state media, the rough ruby was discovered in April, shortly after the country’s traditional New Year celebrations.

The stone is considered the second-largest ruby ever found in Myanmar in terms of weight. However, its value is estimated to exceed that of a larger stone (weighing 21,450 carats) discovered in 1996, due to its superior color quality and better clarity.

The newly discovered ruby has a purplish-red color with yellowish undertones and is described by experts as having high color grade, moderate clarity, and a highly reflective surface.

Myanmar produces around 90% of the world’s rubies, with Mogok and Mong Hsu being the main mining regions. Gemstones are one of the country’s primary sources of income.
