Below are the views of Marzieh Ali Mahmoudi, a midwife, shared in an interview with Mehr News Agency regarding effective and safe methods for treating constipation during pregnancy.

The Main Cause of Constipation During Pregnancy

According to Marzieh Ali Mahmoudi, constipation during pregnancy is mainly caused by hormonal changes. Increased levels of progesterone relax the body's smooth muscles, including those of the intestines. As a result, intestinal peristalsis decreases, slowing the movement of waste through the digestive system and leading to constipation.

The Role of Nutrition and Fiber

Mahmoudi emphasizes that dietary changes are the first and most important solution:

  • Dried figs (preferably soaked in water), dried apricots, and fresh vegetables are highly beneficial.

  • Olive oil can be added to salads or meals to help soften and lubricate the bowels.

  • Increase fiber intake; for example, having two servings of salad with meals (such as lunch) can provide the necessary fiber.

The Impact of Exercise and Stress on Digestion

  • Light exercise such as walking stimulates bowel movements and can significantly relieve constipation.

  • Stress and anxiety directly affect the digestive system and can worsen constipation. Maintaining mental calmness helps improve bowel function.

Safe Medical Treatments During Pregnancy

According to the midwife, non-drug methods, particularly dietary changes, should always be the first choice. However, when necessary, the following options are considered safe:

  • Lactulose: An osmotic laxative that retains water in the intestines.
