Iran Warns Nuclear Safety at Risk Following U.S. Strike

According to Saednews, Iran has called on the United Nations Security Council to condemn what it describes as a U.S. missile strike on the Karun (Darkhovin) nuclear power plant under construction in Khuzestan province.

In a letter addressed to UN Secretary-General António Guterres and the President of the Security Council, Iran's Ambassador to the UN, Amir Saeid Iravani, stated that the attack allegedly occurred at approximately 3:39 a.m. local time on Sunday. According to the letter, multiple missiles struck the nuclear facility, which Iran says is operating under International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) safeguards and is intended solely for peaceful purposes.

The ambassador said the incident marked the 18th reported strike on Iranian nuclear sites protected by IAEA safeguards since the start of what Iran describes as joint U.S.-Israeli military actions in June 2025. He argued that the attacks reflected the Security Council's failure to take effective action.

Iran's letter claims that targeting a safeguarded civilian nuclear facility violates international law, the UN Charter, relevant UN Security Council resolutions, the IAEA Statute, and resolutions adopted by the IAEA General Conference. The document also states that previous international declarations have consistently rejected armed attacks or threats against peaceful nuclear installations.

According to the letter, the head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran had already contacted IAEA Director General Rafael Grossi on July 19, requesting effective measures in response to the situation.

Iran has asked the UN Security Council to reaffirm that attacks on peaceful nuclear facilities are prohibited under international law, call for an immediate end to any attacks or threats against its nuclear infrastructure, and hold the United States accountable under international law for the alleged actions and their consequences.
