Will Trump Use War as an Excuse to Prevent the 2028 Election? / Is Trump Planning to Flex Power in the Upcoming Election?

According to SAEDNEWS, citing Fars News Agency, former Congress member Marjorie Taylor Greene said she is concerned that the U.S. president could use a war against Iran as an excuse to cancel the 2028 presidential election.

Greene, once a loyal ally of the MAGA (Make America Great Again) movement and one of Trump’s strongest supporters, resigned from Congress in January after a public dispute with him.

Her frustration over conflicts in the Middle East and the war in Ukraine, as well as the administration’s handling of the Jeffrey Epstein case files, contributed to the breakdown of their previously strong relationship.

According to The Hill, a U.S. congressional-leaning news website, Greene referred in an interview with Alex Jones—another former MAGA supporter—to Trump’s 2025 meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, in which Zelensky was said to have refused to hold elections due to the ongoing war with Russia.

In that meeting, Trump reportedly told Zelensky: “So you’re saying you can’t have elections during a war? Three and a half years from now, you mean that if we go to war with someone, there will be no more elections? That’s a good thing.”

The former lawmaker warned that rhetoric about expanding wartime powers could normalize the idea while Trump is testing support for a potential third presidential term.

Trump Cannot Run For A Third Term As President

The Georgia Republican said: “In my view, canceling elections during wartime is extremely dangerous and no one should accept it. There cannot be a third term, no. That is against our laws and our Constitution. But Trump is trying to show power in the upcoming elections.”

The 22nd Amendment of the U.S. Constitution prohibits a person from being elected president more than twice. Trump has openly spoken about the possibility of a third term but has also acknowledged that under U.S. law he cannot run again.

Greene’s remarks come amid growing dissatisfaction within the MAGA movement over Trump’s war stance on Iran. Several conservative commentators, including Megyn Kelly and Tucker Carlson—once key allies who helped strengthen Trump’s return to the White House in 2024—have criticized U.S. actions in Iran as a violation of Trump’s “America First” promise to avoid foreign wars.
