According to CBS, Jefferson Kelly, whose son Jackson is aboard the Lincoln for his first sea mission, said the sailors should not be kept on deployment for such a long period.
“These are older ships,” Kelly said, adding that they are not particularly modern or advanced and require considerable work and maintenance around the clock.
The aircraft carrier has now been at sea for nine months, compared with the six-month duration of a typical deployment.
Asked about concerns expressed by the families of Lincoln crew members, Donald Trump denied that the deployment had been unusually long.
“No, that’s not the case,” Trump said, rejecting the suggestion that the families were worried.
He added that the carrier is currently underway and would soon be replaced by another similar carrier.
