SAEDNEWS: At least 111 people have been killed and hundreds are still missing after a powerful magnitude 7.4 earthquake struck Colombia, according to the Colombian Geological Service.
According to Saednews, A powerful earthquake struck western Colombia on Monday, causing severe damage across several cities, including Cali, Pereira, Quibdó and Manizales. The tremor was also felt in neighbouring Ecuador and Panama.
According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the earthquake’s epicentre was located near San José del Palmar in the Chocó region, approximately 400 kilometres (250 miles) west of the capital, Bogotá. The quake occurred at a depth of 107 kilometres (66 miles).
At least 21 aftershocks were recorded within hours of the main earthquake.
The disaster came only days after Abelardo de la Espriella was sworn in as president, placing the new administration in the midst of its first major crisis. The earthquake also revived painful memories of the devastating twin earthquakes that struck neighbouring Venezuela in June.
