Saed News: Dextromethorphan syrup is used in children and adults for the treatment of dry, non-productive cough caused by the common cold. Diarrhea, constipation, nausea, and drowsiness are some of the side effects of dextromethorphan syrup.

Side Effects and Indications of Dextromethorphan Syrup

According to SAEDNEWS, Dextromethorphan is an antitussive (cough suppressant) medication used to treat dry cough caused by colds. Note that this drug is not effective for coughs caused by smoking, asthma, or emphysema.

Tablets and drops are other dosage forms of dextromethorphan.

Adverse drug effects of dextromethorphan:

  • In case of changes in mood, confusion, agitation, irritability, insomnia, severe nausea, or vomiting, consult a physician.

  • In case of shortness of breath, noisy breathing, or difficulty breathing, discontinue the drug and seek medical attention.

  • Report symptoms of drug allergy such as swelling of the lips, face, or body, and itching to a physician.

  • In case of muscle stiffness in the head, neck, or body, inform the physician.

  • In case of constipation, drink enough fluids; however, if it persists or worsens, inform a physician.

Important notes about dextromethorphan syrup use:

  • Patients with asthma, liver disorders, or productive cough should use this drug with caution.

  • If the cough persists for more than one week after using the drug, consult a physician.

  • Excessive doses may cause dizziness, agitation, nausea, or severe vomiting.

  • Use during breastfeeding is contraindicated.

  • Use during pregnancy should be cautious and under medical supervision.
