The Hoz-e-Soltan Lake is one of the tourist attractions of Qom and a significant natural area in Iran. This lake lies beside the busy Tehran-Qom highway. Hoz-e-Soltan Lake

This lake is located 90 kilometers from Tehran and 40 kilometers north of Qom city, adjacent to the Persian Gulf highway. To reach it, the route depends on your starting point. If coming from Qom, enter the Qom-Tehran highway and drive until you reach the 95-kilometer sign for Tehran. Along the way, you will pass the Mahtab complex and the first hill overlooking the lake, continuing until you reach the second hill. Next to this second hill, you will find the main road to the salt mine, a dirt road that leads you down toward the lake.

Alternatively, if coming from Tehran, after traveling 70 kilometers along the highway, when you see a tourism sign, take the first underpass to the other side of the highway and head towards the village of Cheshmeh Shour. After a short distance, you will find the Hoz-e-Soltan Lake ahead of you.

History of the Formation of Hoz-e-Soltan Lake

In 1883, this lake did not exist, and the main route between Tehran and Qom passed through this area. During those years, a person named Amin-al-Sultan, a landowner in the region, ordered the dam on the Shour River to be broken. This action caused flooding along the main route between Tehran and Qom at the time, and the road was rerouted to suit his personal interests and land. Over time, this caused the depression areas of Hoz-e-Soltan and Hoz-e-Marreh to fill up. The name "Hoz-e-Soltan" comes from a caravanserai and cistern of the same name, built during the reign of Sultan Sanjar of the Seljuk Empire, which were used for rest and lodging by travelers on the Tehran-Qom route before the road rerouting.

Salt of Hoz-e-Soltan

The Hoz-e-Soltan Salt Lake spans approximately 240 square kilometers in the northeastern part of Qom. During rainy seasons or when the surrounding snow melts, the inflow of water increases, expanding the lake's size. In contrast, during other times, the lake's size decreases. As a result, the water level in the lake is constantly fluctuating.
