According to Saed Newn; Buckingham Palace announced that Katharine, Duchess of Kent, died on 4 September 2025 at Kensington Palace, surrounded by her family. At age 92, she held the distinction of being the oldest and one of the most admired royals in Britain.
Born Katharine Worsley in 1933, she married Prince Edward, Duke of Kent, in 1961. Unlike many royal figures, she stepped away from royal duties in the mid-1990s, dropping her “Her Royal Highness” title in 2002.
Preferring a private life, she became a music teacher under the name “Mrs Kent,” impacting young minds away from public ceremonies. She also founded the Future Talent charity in 2004 to support musically gifted children from underprivileged backgrounds.
In 1994, the Duchess became the first royal to convert to Catholicism in over three centuries, a historic moment that redefined royal religious norms.
Her funeral will take place on 16 September at Westminster Cathedral, marking the first Catholic funeral for a royal in modern British history. Prior to that, her coffin will lie at Kensington Palace chapel before the Requiem Mass. Afterwards, she will be laid to rest at the Royal Burial Ground at Frogmore.
