According to Saednews, In the town of Osoyoos, Canada, there is a strange and fascinating lake considered one of the world’s rare natural phenomena. Here, visitors can see a lake covered with dozens of colorful circular spots, which is why it is known as the Spotted Lake.
The reason behind the formation of these unusual spots is quite interesting. This small lake is considered one of the most mineral-rich lakes in the world, containing large amounts of minerals such as calcium, sodium sulfate, and magnesium sulfate.
These minerals and salts entered the lake from the surrounding hills. The largest mineral component of the lake is magnesium sulfate. Scientists have also identified eight other minerals in some of the circles, including small amounts of silver and titanium found in certain areas.
The lake only takes on its magical appearance during the summer season. During the winter and spring months, it looks like an ordinary lake. However, as more water evaporates in summer, the strange and colorful spots begin to appear.
Throughout the summer, the size and color of these spots change depending on the amount of evaporation. Their colors range from blue, green, and yellow, depending on the minerals that form each individual circle.
The Indigenous people living in Osoyoos named the lake Kliluk. For centuries, this rare lake was respected as a place with healing properties because local communities believed that each circle contained unique medicinal minerals and special therapeutic benefits.
During World War I, the minerals from the lake were used to produce ammunition. Chinese workers reportedly collected around one ton of salt from the lake’s surface every day and transported it to an ammunition factory in eastern Canada.
The Spotted Lake remained privately owned by the Ernest Smith family for about 40 years. In 1979, Indigenous communities began efforts to purchase the lake and preserve it as a sacred site. After two decades of negotiations, they successfully purchased 22 hectares of land around the lake in 2001 for $720,000.
For thousands of years, Indigenous people and local residents have used the lake’s mineral-rich waters as a traditional remedy for pain and discomfort.
Today, access to Canada’s Spotted Lake is restricted by fencing to protect the area, but its stunning view can still be admired from the nearby highway.
