SAEDNEWS: The U.S. president claimed early Saturday that Friday’s talks with Iran in Muscat had been “very good.
According to the Political Desk of the Saed News website, U.S. President Donald Trump commented early Saturday morning (Tehran time) for the first time on the indirect negotiations between Iranian and American delegations held in Muscat, Oman.
Speaking aboard Air Force One, Trump described Friday’s talks as “very good” and, in line with his usual rhetoric, claimed that Iran is seeking an agreement.
Even before the start of the 12-day conflict between Iran and Israel, Trump had spoken in a positive tone about the negotiations that were underway between Tehran and Washington.
In response to reporters’ questions early Saturday, Trump said:
“We’ve been having some very good talks about Iran. It seems Iran is very eager to reach a deal. We’ll have to see what that deal looks like. But I really think Iran wants to make a deal — and they should feel that way.
“Last time, they decided maybe not to do it, but I think this time their outlook has changed. We’ll see what the agreement turns out to be. It will certainly be different from the last one.
“And we also have a large fleet — a very powerful fleet — moving toward the region, and it will be there very soon. We’ll see how this plays out.”
Indirect negotiations between Iran and the United States over Iran’s nuclear program, mediated by Oman, began late Friday morning in Muscat, the Omani capital. Iranian Foreign Minister Seyed Abbas Araghchi and U.S. chief negotiator Steve Witkoff met separately with Omani Foreign Minister Badr al-Busaidi.
In his initial meeting with his Omani counterpart, Araghchi outlined Iran’s perspectives and proposals regarding the talks, as well as the country’s demands and considerations.
From the outset, the Islamic Republic of Iran has stated that it seeks negotiations that lead to tangible results — negotiations that preserve Iran’s nuclear rights while paving the way for the removal of what it describes as unjust and illegal sanctions.
In recent days, the American side had said it was pursuing broader talks with Tehran that would include missile and regional issues. However, media reports indicate that Friday’s negotiations were limited exclusively to the nuclear issue.
