SAEDNEWS: US Deputy War Secretary Driscoll is reportedly expected to leave his position before the end of the year, potentially earlier. His possible departure would add to recent changes among senior US military officials.
According to SaedNews: The Wall Street Journal reported Friday that US Deputy War Secretary Driscoll is expected to step down before the end of the year and could leave even sooner. His possible departure would mark another change amid a recent series of shifts among senior US military officials.
In April, the US secretary of war abruptly dismissed Army Chief of Staff Gen. Randy George, while President Donald Trump has yet to nominate a permanent replacement. Gen. Christopher LaNeve, previously the secretary of war’s senior military assistant, is currently performing the chief of staff’s duties on an interim basis.
The newspaper said one clear indication that Driscoll may already be preparing to depart emerged this summer, when he and his family moved out of the official residence assigned to the Army secretary at Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall.
Despite reports of tensions between Driscoll and Hegseth, Trump publicly backed Driscoll only last month. During a defense conference in Pennsylvania, the president said of him: “He has a beautiful smile, but in reality he’s a killer.”
The New York Post reported in April that the US secretary of war had increasingly become consumed by “paranoia” over the possibility that he could be removed from his position and replaced by Driscoll.
Citing current and former US government officials, the report said the secretary’s concerns about Driscoll’s standing among Trump’s inner circle, along with other factors, contributed to the dismissals of George, Gen. David Hodne and Maj. Gen. William Greene.
At the time, a source told the newspaper that the White House had informed the secretary of war that he could not remove Driscoll, “at least for now.”
The source added: “So what the secretary of war has done is target and go after anyone he believes is close to Driscoll.”
