SAEDNEWS: In an unprecedented move, Tehran's City Council has announced a week-long waiver of all metro, bus, and traffic zone fees, offering free urban transportation to all residents as the capital reels under heightened tension.
According to Saed News, the head of Tehran’s Urban Development and Transportation Commission, Seyyed Jafar Tashakkori Hashemi, confirmed that public transportation services—including the metro, buses, and congestion zone permits—will be provided free of charge across the capital for the next seven days.
The decision, passed in an emergency session of the City Council, is aimed at easing movement for citizens and reducing traffic pressure as Tehran adjusts to the extraordinary national security climate following recent escalations.
"From tomorrow, all metro and bus rides in Tehran will be free," Tashakkori Hashemi stated. He emphasized that the move is designed to promote safer, more efficient urban travel and to reduce the burden on the public during what he termed "exceptional times."
In a further easing of restrictions, the city’s central traffic control zone—normally requiring paid permits—will also be freely accessible, a rare gesture from the municipality. Tashakkori Hashemi noted that the policy may be extended if necessary.
This decision comes as Tehran experiences high civilian alert, infrastructure strain, and disrupted routines in the aftermath of the U.S. military strike on Iranian nuclear facilities. The city's officials appear focused on ensuring mobility, stability, and continuity of daily life, even as geopolitical tensions ripple across the region.
