SAEDNEWS: ABB’s automation technology helped build the first 3D railway station building. The structure was constructed overnight, between the last train of the day and the first train of the next day.

“A House Built Overnight!”; the astonishing collaboration of ABB robots and 3D printing in Japan

According to the university service of Saed News Agency, citing Interesting Engineering, the project was carried out in collaboration between the construction company Serendix and West Japan Railway Company, demonstrating how robots and 3D printing processes can reduce construction time and minimize disruption to infrastructure operations.

The components were manufactured off-site using 3D printing technology and then transported to the construction location for assembly. An ABB industrial robot played a key role in producing structural elements with high precision. In the next stage, the parts were assembled on-site. The station was built within a single night, after the last train had departed and before the first train arrived.

This method enabled the construction of the station without disrupting transport services, which is typically a major challenge in infrastructure development projects.

ABB stated that robotic automation and off-site manufacturing significantly reduced construction time as well as labor requirements. The project demonstrates how robotics and automation can transform the construction industry by reducing costs, time, and disruptions while improving precision and safety.
