SAEDNEWS: The Abdul-Ali Khan Sufi mansion, built by Haj Mirza Mohammad Ali Khan Sufi in the northern Iranian city of Amlash, is one of the most prominent buildings in Gilan province.
Nestled in the scenic northern city of Amlash, the Abdul-Ali Khan Sufi Mansion stands as one of Gilan province’s most remarkable architectural treasures. Built by Haj Mirza Mohammad Ali Khan Sufi, this mansion was officially recognized as a National Heritage of Iran in 1971, highlighting its historical and cultural significance.
Constructed during the Qajar era, approximately 186 years ago, the mansion spans 5,000 square meters with a 700-meter building. It features two floors designed for seasonal living—summer and winter—comprising 12 rooms and 6 closets. Over the centuries, the mansion has proudly hosted five generations of the Sufi family.
The ground floor, with a height of 225 cm, was historically allocated to service staff, while the first floor, standing at 325 cm, served as the main alcove or reception area. The mansion’s layout reflects classic symmetrical design, a hallmark of northern Iranian architecture.
At the heart of the first floor lies the main alcove (reception hall), flanked by two rooms that open onto eastern and western porches—a distinctive feature of northern Iranian houses. This thoughtful design not only enhances natural ventilation and sunlight but also embodies the elegance and functional sophistication of Qajar-era architecture.
