SAEDNEWS: Shicheng City in China – An Introduction to Shicheng City in China
According to Saednews, You may have heard of submerged cities before. Perhaps the most famous is the legendary island of Atlantis, believed to have disappeared beneath the ocean, although numerous theories debate whether it was real or merely a myth. This time, however, we explore a city that was deliberately submerged and has since become a fascinating tourist attraction.
This ancient city was founded around 1,300 years ago at the foot of Wu Shi Mountain, also known as Five Lion Mountain. Today, it lies beneath the water at a depth of approximately 26 to 40 meters.

In 1959, Shi Cheng and a neighboring town were intentionally flooded as part of a planned project to build a dam on the Xin’an River. The project created an artificial lake and made it possible to establish a hydroelectric power station. Today, the submerged city has become a dream destination for divers.

Remarkably, Shi Cheng, also known as the Lion City, has suffered very little erosion. Its buildings, walls, and even wooden details have remained almost completely intact. A film crew is currently documenting this ancient underwater city.

Archaeologists are intrigued by how the city has survived the gradual destruction and erosion that would normally affect ancient structures over time. Although diving facilities have not yet been established for tourists to explore the historic site, there is hope that it will open to the public in the not-too-distant future.

The artificial Qiandao Lake, also known as the Thousand Island Lake, is one of the region’s major tourist attractions. It has helped establish the area as a popular recreational and travel destination.

The lake is renowned for its crystal-clear, drinkable water. The surrounding mountain scenery is also exceptionally beautiful and well worth visiting. The region enjoys a relatively mild climate, with all four seasons clearly distinguishable. However, autumn is considered a particularly good time to visit, thanks to its sunny, warm, dry, and pleasant weather. The colorful autumn landscape adds even more charm to this remarkable destination.
