Discover the Unique S-Shaped Valley in the United States

According to Saednews, Geological activity and human intervention sometimes combine to create beautiful and extraordinary landscapes. This time, we visit one such place, formed in the wake of dam construction and brought perilously close to destruction before being saved just in time. Join us on this journey of discovery.

Located alongside Lake Powell, on the border between Utah and Arizona, Reflection Canyon is a breathtaking natural wonder. The canyon is actually part of the larger Glen Canyon region, an expansive area in southern Utah and northwestern Arizona, near the Vermilion Cliffs.

Glen Canyon lies north of the Grand Canyon and, like its famous neighbor, was carved by the Colorado River. In 1963, the US government completed the Glen Canyon Dam, creating the artificial Lake Powell. However, the project also caused the river to rise and flood the canyon, placing vast sections of this remarkable landscape at risk of destruction.

Following heated debates and controversy in Congress, efforts were eventually made to protect the area, preserving this natural wonder from complete destruction to some extent. Initially, the canyon was relatively unknown, but it gradually gained recognition thanks to numerous photographs that showcased its extraordinary beauty.

These images inspired nature enthusiasts to undertake the journey and see the canyon for themselves. As a result, a destination that once received little attention in travel guides became a popular tourist attraction, particularly during the summer months. Today, approximately two million people visit Lake Powell and the surrounding area each year.

Its relatively late rise to fame is hardly surprising, given how difficult it is to reach. Visitors can access the area by boat or travel along a long, hot, 88-kilometer (55-mile) road. Alternatively, sightseeing flights offer a unique perspective on the canyon and the surrounding landscapes.

Although the entire area is remarkably beautiful, with the shoreline of Lake Powell being especially picturesque, visitors who make the long journey are rewarded with a spectacular view of the distinctive S-shaped canyon known as Reflection Canyon.

The water level in Lake Powell fluctuates considerably from year to year. However, the lake generally reaches its highest levels between May and July.
