Christ the Redeemer: The Iconic Guardian Overlooking Rio de Janeiro, Brazil

According to Saednews, Christ the Redeemer, one of the world’s most famous Art Deco sculptures, stands majestically atop a mountain in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The idea of building a statue of Jesus Christ on Corcovado Mountain was first proposed in the mid-1850s. However, the construction and completion of this magnificent monument took many years, and it was officially inaugurated in 1931.

The History and Construction of Christ the Redeemer

A team of engineers and specialists decided to use reinforced concrete instead of steel to construct this enormous statue. The statue’s outer layers were made from a type of soft stone because it was more durable and easier to work with.

Construction took nine years, beginning in 1922 and finishing in 1931. In 2014, the statue’s value was estimated at approximately $3.3 million. Christ the Redeemer remains a timeless masterpiece that was officially inaugurated on October 12, 1931.

Christ the Redeemer: Guardian of Rio de Janeiro

Every year, more than 600,000 tourists visit Christ the Redeemer in Tijuca National Park, approximately 700 meters above sea level. The park’s century-old railway transports visitors close to the statue.

In addition to enjoying the spectacular journey through the park, visitors can learn about Brazil’s history and fascinating historical facts. Cafés along the route also provide convenient places to rest and relax.

The Historic Corcovado Railway

The Corcovado Railway was built in 1884 under Emperor Dom Pedro II to transport materials and components for the construction of the statue. Initially powered by steam, the train traveled along a steep uphill track stretching approximately 3,824 meters. It was later converted to electric power.

Over the years, many famous personalities have traveled on this railway, including kings, presidents, artists, princesses, scientists, and popes.

Because the railway operates on electricity, it is also considered an environmentally friendly means of transportation. Nature enthusiasts use the train to demonstrate their commitment to protecting the environment.

One of the New Seven Wonders of the World

Following an online vote among 21 nominated monuments from around the world, Christ the Redeemer in Rio de Janeiro was selected as one of the New Seven Wonders of the World.

Standing 38 meters tall, the statue symbolizes faith, happiness, and peace. With its outstretched arms overlooking Rio de Janeiro, it has become one of Brazil’s most recognizable landmarks and a powerful symbol of the city.

Christ the Redeemer Turns 83

In 2014, during the FIFA World Cup in Brazil, Christ the Redeemer celebrated its 83rd anniversary, having been inaugurated on October 12, 1931.

Today, the iconic statue continues to attract visitors from around the world, offering breathtaking views of Rio de Janeiro and representing the enduring values of faith, joy, and peace.
