If you have a passion for the sea and marine animals, a visit to Istanbul Dolphinarium is highly recommended.

Istanbul Dolphinarium: A Beautiful Attraction in Turkey

According to Saednews, From natural attractions and historic landmarks to modern entertainment venues, Istanbul offers a wide range of places to explore. Galata Tower, Dolmabahçe Palace, Hagia Sophia, Istanbul Dolphinarium, and Sultan Ahmed Mosque are among the city's most popular attractions.

Today, Istanbul has become one of the leading destinations for Iranian travelers. Since many visitors arrive by air, they often do not have access to a private vehicle while exploring the city. Public transportation and taxis can become expensive when visiting several attractions, so renting a car can be a relatively affordable and convenient option for getting around Turkey.

Istanbul Dolphinarium

Istanbul Dolphinarium opened in 2008 and covers an area of approximately 8,695 square meters, including around 5,600 square meters of indoor space.

Located in the Eyüp district, the complex consists of seven interconnected pools. All of the pools are filled with seawater, with a combined capacity of approximately 3,100 cubic meters. The Dolphinarium is a popular place for families, children, and groups of friends looking for an entertaining experience and memorable moments in Istanbul.

Visitors can enjoy a variety of activities and shows, including:

  • Northern fur seal performances

  • Walrus shows

  • Beluga whale performances

  • Dolphin shows

  • Swimming with dolphins

  • Diving with dolphins

  • Dolphin-assisted therapy

Each activity offers a different experience, making the Dolphinarium an interesting destination for visitors of different ages.

Northern Fur Seal Show

As you enter the Dolphinarium, two male and female fur seals welcome visitors. One easy way to distinguish them is by their size: the female is smaller than the male.

Northern fur seal males are significantly larger than females, weighing around 4.5 times as much and being approximately 40 percent longer.

Walrus Show

Walruses are enormous marine mammals, with some individuals weighing as much as 950 kilograms. During their performances, these impressive animals demonstrate a surprising range of skills.

They play basketball, perform push-ups, and even do sit-ups as part of their entertaining routines.

Their talents are not limited to exercise. One of the walruses takes on the role of an entertainer and acts like a DJ, inviting the audience to its imaginary party. Another, known for its love of music, performs on a saxophone and dances on stage.

Beluga Whale Performance

The white whale is one of the most distinctive animals at the Dolphinarium. Known as Daryanavard, this beluga is approximately four meters long and weighs around 1,000 kilograms.

The beautiful whale enters the amphitheater pool while making its characteristic sounds, which has earned it the nickname "sea canary." In addition to vocal performances, Daryanavard can paint and entertain the audience with graceful movements at the end of the show.

Dolphin Show

The final part of the program features four bottlenose dolphins. Prince, Princess, Matilda, and Jera were all born in captivity and have been trained to perform a variety of impressive routines.

Their performance includes dancing and vocalizations, but one of the most exciting parts is their basketball routine with their trainers. Visitors can watch the dolphins make remarkable jumps and score baskets from considerable heights.

Bottlenose dolphins are among the best-known dolphin species and are commonly featured in marine shows. They are also native to parts of the Persian Gulf, where these intelligent marine mammals can be found in their natural habitat.

Swimming with Dolphins

One of the most memorable experiences at Istanbul Dolphinarium is the opportunity to swim with dolphins.

Participants can interact closely with the dolphins, hug them, and even hold onto them while they swim across the pool. Photographs and videos of the experience may also be provided afterward, allowing visitors to preserve their memories.

Diving with Dolphins

Another activity available at the Dolphinarium is diving alongside dolphins. Participants put on diving equipment and enter the pool, where the dolphins swim around them.

This experience offers visitors the chance to observe these intelligent animals from a completely different perspective.

Visitors over the age of 15 may also be able to take part in diving activities, provided they can swim and do not have respiratory problems.

Dolphin-Assisted Therapy

Dolphin-assisted therapy is another service offered at the facility and is generally intended for children between three and sixteen years old.

According to the information provided by the facility, the program may be used as a complementary approach for children with conditions such as autism, Down syndrome, post-traumatic stress disorder, speech difficulties, chronic fatigue syndrome, attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder, cerebral palsy, spasticity, involuntary movements, and muscle spasms.

Children who do not have epilepsy, contagious illnesses, or medical conditions that prevent them from being in the water may be eligible to participate.

Sessions are conducted under the supervision of dolphin trainers, dolphin-assisted therapy specialists, and psychologists. Each session is dedicated to one child. An initial course of ten sessions may be recommended, with the child's progress evaluated after each session. The number of sessions can then be adjusted according to the recommendations of the specialists.

Dolphinarium Café

After spending time with the dolphins, visitors can relax at the Dolphinarium Café. The café is located in a green setting beside the Golden Horn, offering a pleasant place to take a break.

The café has both indoor and outdoor sections, each with a capacity of approximately 60 people. Its menu includes coffee, hot and cold beverages, and a selection of snacks and other refreshments that visitors can enjoy before or after the shows.

Photography with Dolphins

Visitors interested in taking professional photographs with dolphins can arrange a photo session for an additional fee. It is an opportunity to capture a memorable moment with these fascinating marine animals.

The Dolphinarium also has souvenir stalls where visitors can purchase various gifts and keepsakes to remember their visit to Istanbul.
