SAEDNEWS: Men are advised to increase their caffeine intake instead of resorting to unusual methods to maintain sexual potency.
According to a report by the Saed News Family Magazine service, a study published in issue 2008 of the journal Human Reproduction conducted a long-term investigation on adult sons whose mothers consumed caffeine during pregnancy. Mothers who drank four to seven cups per day gave birth to sons who showed lower sperm count and lower testosterone levels. In addition, adult sons who consumed the highest amounts of caffeine had testosterone levels 14% higher than those who consumed less caffeine, although no differences were observed in sperm quality or volume.
Caffeine is a compound belonging to the purine family. It is extracted from natural sources such as plants or can be chemically produced in laboratories from uric acid.
As a natural alkaline substance, it can be found in coffee, tea, cocoa, guarana, and kola nut.
Some juices, chocolate, diet pills, and pre-workout supplements also contain caffeine and are easily available in pharmacies. For example, many doctors recommend caffeine as a stimulant for the heart and respiratory system.
According to a university study, drinking just two cups of coffee per day can significantly improve sexual performance. Scientists believe this may be due to caffeine triggering a chemical reaction that relaxes muscles and increases blood flow to the penis, resulting in stronger sexual performance.
However, moderation is important. Researchers also found that men who consumed three or more cups of coffee per day had lower sexual desire compared to those who drank two cups.
Previous studies also suggested that caffeine may enhance sexual motivation in women. Therefore, some recommendations suggest that drinking a cup of coffee before bedtime may help improve mood and sexual experience.
In a 2006 experiment on male rats conducted by the University of Southwestern Texas, scientists found that coffee stimulates areas of the brain associated with sexual arousal. However, this effect is likely more noticeable in individuals who do not regularly consume caffeine.
Scientists have long debated whether excessive coffee intake is harmful. Some claim that consuming more than four cups per day may lead to anxiety, tremors, irritability, insomnia, and stomach discomfort.
However, a separate study in March involving 25,000 middle-aged men and women found that consuming three to five cups per day may reduce the risk of heart disease and stroke.
According to this study, men who consumed 85–170 mg of caffeine daily had a 42% lower risk of erectile dysfunction compared to those consuming 0–7 mg. For those consuming 171–303 mg, the reduction was about 39%.
Men are advised not to rely on unusual methods to maintain sexual health and instead manage caffeine intake moderately.
Coffee contains two natural compounds that may benefit sexual function and overall health.
Caffeine may stimulate certain brain regions involved in arousal and may also increase blood flow to the reproductive organs, supporting better erections.
Additionally, coffee contains nitric oxide, a neurotransmitter important for widening arteries and relaxing smooth muscles in penile tissue. When these muscles relax, blood vessels expand and allow increased blood flow.
If smooth muscle contracts, erections may not occur properly. Nitric oxide is therefore important for erectile function because it promotes the production of cGMP, a compound that helps smooth muscles relax.
Furthermore, nitric oxide affects endothelial cells in blood vessels. Damage to the endothelium can cause blood vessels to narrow, reducing blood flow to the penis and making it difficult to achieve an erection.
Caffeine may also be linked to testosterone levels and sperm quality and volume.
