SAEDNEWS: Indian Scientists Say Eating Watermelon at Night Is Harmful to the Body
According to a news report from Saed News, citing Young Journalists Club, watermelon is one of the most popular fruits during hot weather. It is rich in lycopene and, due to its high water content and low calories, is often recommended for people aiming to lose weight.
Experts consistently emphasize the importance of adequate water intake during summer. Fortunately, watermelon—because of its high water content—can help prevent dehydration during hot summer days. It also contains various micronutrients, making it a suitable snack option.
In fact, 94% of watermelon is water. It is also a source of lycopene, potassium, and other nutrients. Additionally, because it contains a reasonable amount of fiber, it can support digestive health. Some people prefer to eat a light dinner such as bread, watermelon, and cheese. However, despite its nutritional benefits, it is advised not to consume watermelon at night or before going to bed.
A specialist from India is quoted as saying: “I do not recommend consuming watermelon after 7 p.m. at all. Watermelon is somewhat acidic, and eating it at night may disrupt digestion and slow down the digestive process when the body is less active. The best time to eat watermelon is between 12 and 1 p.m., when digestive activity is at its peak.”
The main reasons, according to some Indian researchers, for avoiding watermelon at night include the following:
Eating watermelon at night may lead to digestive issues, including irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), which can cause stomach discomfort the next day. Since digestion slows during nighttime, experts generally recommend avoiding sweet and acidic foods at night.
Because watermelon contains a significant amount of natural sugar, eating it at night may contribute to weight gain in some individuals.
Watermelon has a high water content. Eating it before sleep may cause frequent nighttime urination, reducing sleep quality and leading to fatigue the next day. In children, this may also increase the risk of bedwetting due to reluctance to wake up for bathroom visits.
Nighttime consumption of watermelon may cause digestive problems such as diarrhea or constipation.
In conclusion, watermelon has many health benefits and should not be excluded from the diet. However, it is best consumed in moderation during the day, preferably before 7 p.m.
