This happens because increased blood flow moves toward the face, especially the eye area. The delicate skin around the eyes has tissues that can absorb tears, which can further contribute to puffiness.

You may prefer to stay at home until your eyes return to normal, but that is not always possible. The good news is that reducing eye puffiness is simple. You only need to cool the eyes and help drain excess fluid from the area. You don’t need any special ingredients—many effective remedies are already available in your kitchen.


Cold Compress

The easiest and most effective treatment for swollen eyes is a cold compress. It tightens the skin around the eyes and calms blood vessels in the area, gradually reducing swelling.

Soak a clean cotton cloth in cold water, place it over your eyes and surrounding skin, and gently press it. Continue for about 10 minutes. Repeat several times a day if needed.


Cucumber

Cucumber can also reduce swelling caused by crying. Its natural astringent properties help reduce puffiness.

Wash a cucumber and cut it into thick slices. Chill them in the refrigerator for 15 minutes. Place one slice over each closed eye. Replace them with fresh cool slices once they warm up. Continue until swelling decreases, then rinse your eyes with lukewarm water.


Tea Bags

Tea bags contain tannins that can penetrate the skin, reduce swelling, and improve blood circulation.

Place two tea bags in the refrigerator for 30 minutes. Lie down and place the cooled tea bags on your closed eyes for 10–15 minutes. Repeat as needed until puffiness disappears.


Gentle Massage

Massage therapy can also help reduce eye puffiness. Massaging the nose area helps improve circulation and relieve fluid buildup.

Apply a few drops of coconut or olive oil on the nose. Gently massage the bridge of the nose with your eyes closed. Then lie down with your head slightly elevated to relax and allow fluid drainage.


Egg White Mask

Egg white contains skin-tightening properties that can reduce puffiness.

Separate the egg white and whisk it until smooth. Apply it under the eyes using a brush. Let it dry, then rinse thoroughly with water. Repeat as needed.


Salt Water

Salt helps draw out excess fluid through osmosis.

Mix half a teaspoon of salt in a cup of warm water. Soak two cotton pads and place them over closed eyes while lying down with your head elevated. Rinse afterward. Repeat if necessary.


Aloe Vera

Aloe vera nourishes the skin and boosts collagen production.

Extract fresh aloe vera gel and apply it under the eyes. Massage gently with tapping motions. Let it dry, then wash with cool water. Repeat as needed.


Rose Water

Rose water tightens and refreshes the skin, reducing puffiness.

Soak two cotton pads in rose water and place them over closed eyes for 5 minutes. Rinse your eyes with water afterward. Repeat until swelling reduces.


Drinking Water

One of the simplest remedies is staying hydrated. Crying can cause fluid loss, and drinking water helps restore balance. Proper hydration prevents the body from retaining excess fluid, including around the eyes. Add lemon if preferred.


Sleep

Eye puffiness takes time to improve. Proper rest is essential. Quality sleep helps cell regeneration and reduces swelling. Aim for 7–8 hours of sleep. Sleeping on your back helps prevent fluid accumulation in the face.


Conditions That Can Cause Puffy Eyes

Sometimes eye swelling is linked to other conditions, such as:

  • Pregnancy

  • Allergies

  • Dermatitis

  • Medication side effects

  • Serious illnesses

  • Mononucleosis

  • Menstrual cycle

  • Blepharoplasty surgery
