SAEDNEWS: Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi urged the international community to hold the United States accountable for violations of international law and alleged war crimes against Iran, warning that indifference to genocide could have far-reaching consequences for countries around the world.
According to Saednews, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi made the remarks during a meeting with Swiss Foreign Minister Ignazio Cassis in New York on Tuesday, held on the sidelines of the annual session of the United Nations General Assembly. The two officials discussed bilateral relations as well as regional and international developments.
Araqchi outlined Iran’s position on regional developments following what he described as acts of aggression by the United States and Israel against Iran, as well as the continuation of interventionist measures, a naval blockade and economic pressure on the Iranian people.
He stressed that all countries have a responsibility to safeguard the UN Charter and international law, particularly the prohibition on the use of force. Araqchi also referred to what he described as war crimes committed by the United States and Israel against Iran during their military actions over the past year and a half.
The Iranian foreign minister reaffirmed Tehran’s determination to defend its national security and sovereignty.
Referring to what he described as repeated US breaches of its commitments, including the alleged violation of the Islamabad memorandum of understanding and the escalation of actions against Iran, Araqchi said the international community has a responsibility to hold Washington accountable for the consequences of what he called unlawful actions.
He also pointed to what he described as serious violations of international humanitarian law by the United States and Israel, as well as multiple alleged war crimes, including the incidents in Minab and Lamerd.
Araqchi stressed that all states party to the 1949 Geneva Conventions have a duty to investigate and prosecute perpetrators in accordance with the fundamental principle of respecting and ensuring respect for international humanitarian law.
He warned that indifference toward genocide and war crimes, together with continued impunity for those responsible, could have far-reaching consequences for the international community.
The two sides also exchanged views on Iran-Switzerland cooperation aimed at contributing to peace and stability in the region.
