According to Saednews, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Wednesday expressed deep concern over a renewed exchange of fire between the United States and Iran overnight, while warning about reported civilian casualties, including a strike that allegedly hit a wedding ceremony in Iran.
UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said Guterres was “gravely concerned” by the latest escalation and “deeply alarmed” by reports of civilians being killed or injured.
The UN chief condemned all attacks targeting civilians and stressed that all parties must comply with international humanitarian law, including the principles of distinction, proportionality, and precaution.
Dujarric said several countries across the region remain affected by the escalation, with airspace restrictions and disruptions to critical shipping routes continuing to create serious challenges.
Guterres called for an immediate halt to military operations and urged all sides to show restraint, warning against actions or rhetoric that could further intensify already high tensions.
He also cautioned that any further escalation could have devastating consequences for civilians and the wider region, particularly as humanitarian operations are already overstretched and underfunded.
The UN secretary-general urged the United States and Iran to urgently return to diplomatic efforts, emphasizing that a comprehensive and lasting resolution can only be reached through dialogue and negotiations.
