New Washington Move at the Agency; Reuters Reports Draft Resolution Against Iran

According to SAEDNEWS, Reuters stated that this comes as Tehran and Washington are engaged in talks over extending a ceasefire agreement—an arrangement that could pave the way for discussions on issues including Iran’s nuclear program.

However, diplomats based at the IAEA told Reuters that Washington is preparing the text of a resolution against Iran ahead of next week’s quarterly Board of Governors meeting, but it has not yet been distributed and its details remain unclear.

Mikhail Ulyanov, Russia’s ambassador to the IAEA, told reporters: “I think this move could provoke the Iranian side.”

Russia and China are two countries that have opposed all recent resolutions against Iran at the Board of Governors. These resolutions have been jointly proposed by the United States, the United Kingdom, France, and Germany and have been adopted by majority vote.

Ulyanov added: “As far as I know, they intend to ask Iran to allow IAEA staff access to nuclear facilities on Iranian soil.”

However, he also said he does not believe the United States will ultimately formally submit the draft.

The U.S. mission to the IAEA declined to comment on the matter.
