SAEDNEWS: The Foreign Minister said the parties agreed on guiding principles and will now move to drafting the agreement text, but this does not mean a deal will be reached quickly.

What Happened Behind Closed Doors in Geneva? Is an Agreement Near?

According to Saed News political service, Etemad wrote:

What was the outcome of the second round of negotiations between Iran and the United States? Have the two sides managed to agree on a framework for talks, or are discussions still ongoing? These questions have been on the minds of many Iranians since the start of the negotiations, and efforts to find answers continue.

However, the Iranian Foreign Minister believes that no specific date has been set yet. “We agreed to work on the texts of a possible agreement, exchange them, and then set another date for a third round,” said Seyed Abbas Araghchi in an interview after the conclusion of the second round in Geneva. “The second round was indirect, and we had good discussions. Compared to the previous round, more serious topics were raised. The atmosphere was more constructive, and various ideas were presented and discussed in depth.”

Araghchi added: “In the end, we were able to reach general agreement on a set of guiding principles, which we will follow moving forward as we work on the text of the agreement—not that we can quickly reach a full deal. This means the process has started, and we hope it concludes as soon as possible. We are ready to devote enough time to it. Once we reach the stage of drafting the text, the work becomes more detailed and complex.”

He continued: “In my view, good progress has been made compared to the previous session, and we now have a clear path ahead, which I consider positive. No specific dates have been set, and both sides will work on the texts of a possible agreement, exchange them, and then set a date for the third round. When asked whether the negotiations are back on track, I said: It is not yet a full roadmap, but we now have a clearer picture of what needs to be done and what should be avoided. Of course, both sides still have positions that will take time to reconcile, but at least now we have guiding principles and a clearer path forward.”

Iran–U.S. Talks in Geneva End with Tangible Progress

Yesterday, Oman’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs also announced that the talks in Geneva concluded with tangible progress. In a statement reflected by Tasnim News, Oman confirmed a consultative meeting between its Foreign Minister, Badr bin Hamad Al Busaidi, and U.S. President Joe Biden’s special representative, Steve Witkoff, along with Jared Kushner.

The statement noted that the meeting took place in Geneva before the start of the Iranian-U.S. negotiations, which were mediated by the Sultanate of Oman. A comprehensive assessment of the overall negotiation atmosphere was conducted, reviewing the political and technical requirements for success in a realistic and constructive manner—a strategy aimed at strengthening opportunities to reach understandings aligned with the talks’ objectives.

The statement concluded that the Iran–U.S. negotiations ended with tangible progress, paving the way for continued dialogue in the near future.
