Ship-tracking data shows the Amara entered the Persian Gulf empty on Monday with its identification transponders switched on. After entering the waterway, the tanker made at least five 180-degree U-turns.
The vessel is now stationary in the northern part of the waterway, an area that has been used for transit routes approved by Iran.
