SAEDNEWS: United Nations Secretary General Antonio Guterres on Saturday revealed that the UN Security Council intends to take punitive measures against all parties involved in human rights violations during the ongoing war in Sudan.
According to SAEDNEWS, Speaking at a press conference on the sidelines of the 39th African Union (AU) summit in Addis Ababa, Guterres emphasized that these measures would target those responsible for abuses across the entire country, rather than being limited to specific conflict zones like El Fasher, The Sudan Tribune reported.
Guterres stated that the United Nations is working closely with the African Union and international partners to secure an immediate ceasefire and pave the way for the establishment of a civilian-led democratic state.
The UN chief noted that resolving the crisis faces significant hurdles, including the continued fueling of the conflict by unnamed foreign states and the belief among the warring sides that a military victory remains possible.
He called on the international community to take urgent action to end the bloodshed and return Sudan to a path of stability.
On the sidelines of the summit, a large-scale demonstration was held at the AU headquarters by the “Women for Peace and Justice Platform.” The protest aimed to amplify the voices of Sudanese women, who have faced severe challenges since the conflict began nearly three years ago.
Participants delivered an urgent appeal to several African leaders and diplomatic missions, criticizing the international community’s silence regarding violations against women in Sudan.
International reports have highlighted a disturbing increase in abuses against women during the war, including widespread incidents of rape, kidnapping, and killing.
