Birth:

Ali Ardeshir Larijani was born on June 3, 1957 (13 Khordad 1336) in Najaf, Iraq. He is the son of the Shia cleric Mirza Hashem Amoli and the son-in-law of Morteza Motahhari. His family hails from the Larijan region of Amol. Before his birth, his father had relocated to Iraq for religious studies at the Najaf seminary, where Ali Larijani was born. He has four brothers named Mohammad Javad, Sadegh, Baqer, and Fazel. His sister is married to Mostafa Mohaghegh Damad. Ahmad Tavakoli, a former member of parliament and member of the Expediency Discernment Council, is his cousin’s son. Ali Larijani has four children named Fatemeh, Sara, Morteza, and Mohammad Reza.

Ali Larijani completed his primary and secondary education up to high school diploma in Qom. After passing the national university entrance exam in 1975 (1354), he began his undergraduate studies in Computer Science at Sharif University of Technology. He graduated with a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science in 1979 (1358). Upon the recommendation of Morteza Motahhari, he pursued philosophy and earned his Master’s and Ph.D. degrees in Philosophy from the University of Tehran. Larijani is currently a faculty member at the University of Tehran. He has authored several works in various fields, including three books on Kant’s philosophy and 15 research articles on diverse scientific topics.

Marriage at Age 20:

Dr. Ali Larijani married Farideh Motahhari, the 15-year-old daughter of Morteza Motahhari, in 1977 (1356). Ali Motahhari is her brother.

Children:

Ali Larijani and his wife have four children: two daughters named Fatemeh and Sara, and two sons named Morteza and Mohammad Reza.

One of Ali Larijani’s sons is a seminary student in Qom, while the other graduated from Iran University of Science and Technology.

Sara Larijani is a public figure and social activist in Iran. She was born on May 17, 1983 (27 Ordibehesht 1362). Sara graduated in Civil Engineering from Khajeh Nasir al-Din Tusi University. She has worked as a social activist and journalist. From 2005 to 2012, she worked as a reporter and journalist for the Etemad Melli newspaper, where she covered political, social, and cultural topics, gaining considerable attention with her articles and reports.

Career Start at Age 24:

In 1981 (1360), at the age of 24, Ali Larijani was appointed head of the IRIB Central News Unit. In 1982 (1361), he joined the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), serving as deputy and deputy chief of staff until 1992 (1371). He also served as deputy minister of labor and deputy minister of post and telegraph.

Career at IRIB:

Larijani’s first five years in IRIB followed by another five-year period saw significant qualitative and quantitative development in IRIB. This included establishment and expansion of provincial networks such as Qom radio and TV, Radio Ma’aref, Quran Network, Al-Alam, Al-Kawthar, IRIB News Network, Jam-e-Jam international channels, and producing quality series like "Velayat-e Eshgh" (about Imam Reza), "Tanhatarin Sardar" (about Imam Hassan), "Mardan-e Anjeles" (People of the Cave), "Maryam-e Moqaddas" (Virgin Mary), "Roshan-tar az Khamooshi" (Mulla Sadra), "Sheikh Bahai," "Kif-e Englisi," "Shab-e Dahom," "Dar Cheshm-e Baad," "Mokhtarnameh," and dozens of other films and series. Other achievements included the establishment of Jam-e-Jam newspaper, expanding multi-media activities, personality-building efforts, and expanding IRIB centers across provinces.

Supreme National Security Council:

Larijani served as one of two representatives of the Supreme Leader in the Supreme National Security Council for five years. In September 2005 (Shahrivar 1384), by appointment of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, he was named Secretary of the Supreme National Security Council. For years, he had criticized certain nuclear policies, famously stating after the Paris Agreement, "No sane person would trade a drowning man for candy," a phrase that remains memorable.

Parliamentary Career:

Ali Larijani entered the 8th parliament as the representative of Qom, and with majority support from fellow MPs, was elected Speaker of the Parliament. He was also elected Speaker in the 9th and 10th parliaments after winning the majority vote from Qom constituents.

2021 Presidential Election:

On the last day of registration for the 2021 presidential election, Ali Larijani officially registered as a candidate. He aimed to become the main rival to the principlist (conservative) candidate. Some described his participation and potential victory as the start of a third Rouhani administration.
