Lari House – A Highlight of Yazd’s Architecture

It’s hard to visit Yazd and not be struck by its unique architecture. The Lari House is a gem of desert architecture and one of the top attractions in Yazd. Built in 1864 (1243 AH), it has now been transformed into a museum open to the public.

With a 1,200 m² footprint, dozens of rooms, doors, and windows, the house offers a rich sense of authentic Iranian elegance. The open-air garden space and peaceful ambiance, especially at sunset, take visitors back in time.

Like many desert homes, it features windcatchers that helped cool the house during hot seasons. Its structure minimizes sun exposure and retains heat during colder months—making it a great summer refuge for heat-sensitive visitors. It's located in Fahadan neighborhood, on Imam Khomeini Street.

Karakal Desert – A Wild Beauty

The Karakal Desert is more than just a recreation area—it’s a valuable natural attraction. It’s home to the rare caracal, a wild feline species. If you're lucky, you might even spot one on your visit.

Here, you can enjoy activities such as camel riding, motorbiking, safari rides, and stargazing. To explore this desert, head to Sadegh Abad village, 15 km from Bafq, Yazd.

Fahraj Grand Mosque – A Living Ancient Wonder

Want to visit one of Yazd’s oldest still-functioning attractions? Then Fahraj Grand Mosque is the place. Originally constructed during the Sassanid era, it was later converted into a mosque.

The mosque showcases traditional Persian-Islamic architecture and has a distinctive aura. To reach it, travel the Yazd-Bafq road to Fahraj village. The mosque's minarets are visible from much of the village.

Alexander’s Prison – The Mysterious Side of Yazd

One of Yazd’s more mysterious attractions is Alexander’s Prison, also known as Ziaieh School. Legend has it that this building was once a prison built by Alexander the Great. Some believe it to be Yazd’s oldest structure.

Despite the centuries, the building still stands firm with its majestic and mesmerizing design. Later, it was repurposed as a school—hence its alternate name. You’ll find it in Fahadan, on Imam Street.

4

Dolat Abad Garden – Home of the World’s Tallest Windcatcher

The Dolat Abad Garden is one of Yazd’s most unique sites. It houses the tallest windcatcher in the world and is also one of the nine Persian Gardens listed by UNESCO as World Heritage Sites.

This elegant garden stands on land once filled with numerous historical gardens, making it one of Iran’s oldest. In addition to its famed windcatcher, the garden features symmetrical design, diverse plants, and a traditional irrigation system. It’s located in Chahar Menar neighborhood, off Shahid Rajaei Street, in Ferdowsi Alley.
