According to Saed News’ Society Desk, citing Parsineh, while most diamonds—like the world’s largest rough diamond, the Cullinan—are found deep within the Earth in kimberlite igneous rocks, the source of the enigmatic black diamond is far more mysterious. Theories suggest that this black diamond emerged from the heart of a meteorite that landed on Earth, as carbonado diamonds contain the mineral osbornite, which is found only in meteorites, indicating an extraterrestrial origin.

These black diamonds are believed to be between 2.6 and 3.8 billion years old and have so far only been discovered in Brazil and the Central African Republic.

According to the International Gem Society, these stones contain amorphous carbon, diamond, and graphite. They are found exclusively in alluvial sedimentary deposits, which gives them significantly greater durability than conventional crystalline diamonds. This extraordinary toughness is said to have made cutting and polishing the diamond into 55 facets a three-year endeavor.
