An Unforgettable Journey in Mahabad: From Saholan Cave to the Historic Mirza Rasoul Bathhouse

According to the Family Magazine service of Saed News, the tourist attractions of Mahabad are far more numerous than you might expect. The city has 91 registered national heritage sites, and another 40 sites are currently in the process of being added to Iran’s National Heritage List.

Mahabad is a lush and cool city in northwestern Iran, located in West Azerbaijan Province. Its history dates back thousands of years. Over time, it has experienced many changes: in the past, it was a small village that gradually developed into a well-established city and the center of government for the Mukri tribe. Its natural attractions, pleasant climate—especially in spring—and border markets have all contributed to the city’s appeal.

The majority of Mahabad’s population is Sunni Muslim, while small communities of Armenian Christians, Jews, and Shia Muslims also live alongside them.

Geographically, Mahabad shares land borders with Miandoab to the north and Sardasht to the south. Due to its favorable location, in recent years the city has experienced economic growth driven by the expansion of imported goods markets and the establishment of one of Iran’s largest second-hand goods bazaars, which has created new job opportunities in the region.

Mahabad offers a variety of tourist attractions, with its natural sites being the most famous and beautiful. The most accessible and popular natural attraction is the Mahabad River, which flows through the city. Another highlight is the Saholan Cave, the second-largest water cave in Iran after Ali Sadr Cave, located near Mahabad, where visitors can explore its interior by boat.
