According to the tourism section of SaedNews, among the numerous attractions of Tabriz, the Ain Ali Recreation Complex holds a special place. This vast area, recognized as the largest mountain recreational site in Iran, is far more than just a hiking destination. It is a full-fledged leisure complex that can easily fill an entire day of your trip.

With a rich history tied to the historical shrine of Aun ibn Ali, combined with modern and exciting amenities, Ain Ali offers a unique contrast. Whether you are seeking serenity in nature, adrenaline-pumping adventures, or spiritual visits, Ain Ali has something for everyone.

Where is Ain Ali Mountain?

In the northern part of Tabriz, a range of reddish mountains known as Ain Ali (Aun ibn Ali) rises, with the highest peak reaching 1,960 meters above sea level. The mountain is actually a collection of peaks, hills, valleys, and other geological features.

  • North: Talesh River (Ajichai), Lake Urmia, and Ahar County valleys

  • East: Khalik Spring (Khalik Bulaghi)

  • South: Towards Tabriz Airport

  • West: Streets and neighborhoods of Tabriz

Thanks to its height, much of Tabriz city can be seen from the mountain. Ain Ali is located along Pasdaran Highway, making it easily accessible. Visitors can reach the site via the highway exit or directly from Ideh Lou Street in the city center. Multiple parking areas are available for convenience.

Address: Pasdaran Highway, Tabriz, East Azerbaijan Province

Attractions and Activities

Shrine of Aun ibn Ali

At the highest point of Ain Ali Mountain stands the shrine of Aun ibn Ali, a popular destination for travelers. Historically, this site served as a fire temple and worship place before the arrival of Islam and later became a shrine. Some historical accounts, such as those by French traveler Jean-Baptiste Tavernier, suggest it may have been a church before Islam.

The site also contains a memorial for eight anonymous Iranian war martyrs from the Iran-Iraq war, alongside the shrine of Zain ibn Ali, said to be a son of Imam Ali. The shrine features Ilkhanid-era architecture and, despite historical damage, has undergone multiple restorations, including recent ones.

At night, the shrine glows beautifully thanks to full lighting, while an asphalted path and cable car make access easy.

Zipline Adventure

One of the most thrilling activities after the cable car is the zipline, inaugurated in 2018. Measuring 500 meters in length with a 75-meter elevation difference, it is one of the longest ziplines in Iran, providing adrenaline-packed fun for adventure lovers.

Cable Car

The cable car, opened in 2010, is one of Ain Ali’s most popular attractions. It not only offers breathtaking views of the mountains and city but also makes the upper areas of the mountain easily accessible. Each cabin accommodates eight people and covers 1.5 kilometers, with restaurants and cafes available at the second station.

Artificial Lake – Dagh Goli

Located on the western side of the mountain, Dagh Goli Lake is another highlight. With a volume of 54,000 cubic meters, it offers recreational activities such as boating and fishing, all set against scenic views and the flight of birds, creating a peaceful and memorable experience.

Best Time to Visit

Tabriz has a cold climate, making spring to early autumn (late April to late September) the most ideal period to visit Ain Ali and enjoy outdoor activities. Summer is pleasant for those who prefer mild temperatures, while winter can be quite cold and snowy.

Final Words

The Ain Ali Recreation Complex combines nature, history, spirituality, and adventure in one destination. It is more than just a sightseeing spot; it is a place to escape the city, breathe fresh mountain air, enjoy modern recreational activities, and explore historical sites. When visiting Tabriz, dedicate a full day to Ain Ali for one of the most complete and memorable experiences in Iran’s tourism capital.
