SAEDNEWS: Knowing how to check refrigerated leftovers can help prevent foodborne illness and reduce unnecessary food waste. Storage time, refrigerator temperature, appearance, smell, and proper handling can all help determine whether food should be eaten or discarded.
According to SAEDNEWS, most cooked leftovers should generally be eaten within three to four days when kept properly refrigerated at 4°C (40°F) or below. If you cannot remember when the food was prepared or stored, it is safer not to eat it. Writing the storage date on containers can make this easier to track.
An unusual smell, visible mold, discoloration, slimy texture, or unexpected changes in appearance can indicate spoilage. However, food can sometimes contain harmful bacteria without showing obvious signs of spoilage. Therefore, normal smell and appearance do not guarantee that food is safe.

Food should be refrigerated within two hours of cooking or serving. If it has been left at room temperature for longer, especially in warm conditions, the risk of bacterial growth increases. Large amounts of food should be divided into shallow containers so they cool more quickly in the refrigerator.
When leftovers are still within their recommended storage period, reheat them thoroughly until they are steaming hot throughout. Stir food when necessary to help distribute heat evenly, particularly when using a microwave. Only reheat the amount you plan to eat rather than repeatedly warming and cooling the entire container.
Food safety should take priority over avoiding waste. If leftovers have been stored for too long, were kept at an unsafe temperature, or show clear signs of spoilage, they should be discarded. Do not taste questionable food to determine whether it is safe, because harmful microorganisms may be present without noticeably changing the taste.
