According to Saednews, A long-term study suggests that frequently watching television during middle age may be associated with structural changes in the brain decades later, including signs linked to cognitive decline. Researchers emphasize that the type of sedentary activity people engage in—not just the amount of time spent sitting—may play an important role in long-term brain health.

The findings indicate that people who reported watching television often during their leisure time in middle age were more likely to show smaller brain regions associated with memory, reduced frontal and occipital lobe volumes, and greater white matter damage later in life. These changes are linked to aging, increased stroke risk, cognitive decline, and dementia.

David Raichlen, a professor of biological sciences and anthropology at the University of Southern California (USC) and senior author of the study, said that while researchers have long focused on how much people sit, the new findings suggest equal attention should be paid to what people are doing while sitting.

The Study

Researchers analyzed data from approximately 1,700 adults with an average age of 53 who participated in the long-running Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities (ARIC) study between 1987 and 1989. The ARIC study follows participants over many years to investigate cardiovascular and brain health.

Participants were asked how often they watched television during their free time, ranging from "never or rarely" to "very often." They also reported how much of their workday they spent sitting.

More than 20 years later, participants underwent MRI brain scans. Compared with those who said they rarely or never watched television, individuals who frequently watched TV showed widespread structural differences throughout the brain.

Brain Changes Observed

Researchers found:

  • Smaller brain volumes in regions associated with the early stages of Alzheimer's disease.

  • Greater white matter hyperintensities, a marker of small blood vessel disease linked to cognitive impairment and dementia.

  • Smaller frontal lobes, which are involved in executive function and decision-making.

  • Smaller occipital lobes, which play a key role in visual processing.

These associations remained significant even after accounting for factors such as physical activity, diabetes, body mass index (BMI), smoking, and alcohol consumption.

Not All Sitting Appears to Have the Same Effect

Interestingly, the study found that sedentary work did not show the same pattern. People who reported spending long periods sitting at work actually tended to have larger frontal and occipital lobes and fewer white matter abnormalities than those who spent similar amounts of time watching television.

Researchers suggest this difference may be because many desk-based jobs involve continuous mental engagement, problem-solving, and decision-making, whereas television viewing is generally a passive activity with lower cognitive demands.

Differences Between Men and Women

When researchers analyzed MRI results separately by sex, they found that the brain changes associated with both television viewing and occupational sitting were more pronounced in men than in women. The reasons for this difference remain unclear and require further investigation.

Study Limitations

The researchers noted several limitations:

  • Television viewing was based on participants' self-reported habits, which may be less accurate than objective measurements.

  • The study shows an association rather than proving that watching television directly causes brain changes.

  • Additional research is needed to understand the biological mechanisms involved and whether other lifestyle factors contribute to these findings.

Implications

The findings suggest that future health recommendations may focus not only on reducing sedentary time but also on encouraging mentally stimulating activities while sitting. Instead of simply advising people to move more, healthcare professionals may recommend limiting passive television viewing and replacing some of that time with activities such as reading, learning, puzzles, creative hobbies, or other cognitively engaging pursuits.

According to the researchers, the nature of sedentary activities may have distinct effects on brain health, highlighting the importance of keeping the mind active even during periods of physical inactivity.
