Saed News: Google is working on adding new features to Android ahead of its next major update, Android 17, expected later this year.

Android Detects Fraudulent Calls

According to SAEDNEWS, citing Engadget, Android users will benefit from an upgraded version of scam call detection features, along with improvements in Google Photos and the “Search Circle” feature. A new AI-based summarization feature is also being introduced in Google Play Books.

Since 2024, Android has been able to warn users about potentially fraudulent calls. However, the new upgrade goes further: if a caller spoofs one of the contacts saved in a user’s phonebook, Android will now alert the user. This feature is part of an update to Google’s Phone app.

Google explained in a blog post that when a number calls a user using the Google Phone app, the device sends a silent authentication signal that confirms the call is genuinely originating from the owner’s device. This “digital handshake” uses the Rich Communication Services (RCS) protocol and is fully private.

If the authentication handshake does not occur, the user will receive a warning advising them to hang up immediately. Google says this spoofing detection works on Android 12 and newer devices using the Phone app.

In addition, Google plans to roll out its Personal Safety app for users under 13, allowing medical information and emergency contacts to be displayed on the lock screen and enabling quick activation of safety features such as crash detection.
